This annual event includes academics meeting,  academics and ESRs meeting, presentations given by all the 15 ESRs, and  three seminars (“Nonlinear Port-Hamiltonian Systems” by Prof. Arjan van der,  “Aeroelasticity of Wind Turbines” by Prof. Rafael Palacios, and “Input-to-state Stability” by Dr. David Angeli). We are glad that several ESRs from ITN consortium WinGrid also attended these seminars. Congratulations to ESR Pietro Lorenzetti on receiving the Best Presentation Prize, and to all the ESRs on their excellent outputs on both research and dissemination.

ConFlex consortium organized an invited session titled “CONFLEX : Control of flexible structures and fluid-structure interactions” by Professors Y. Le Gorrec, H. Zwart, G. Weiss and X. Zhao at the 21st IFAC World Congress 2020, Germany, July 11-17, 2020. This conference will go virtually due to Covid-19. The presentations of its regular and invited sessions will be made available for individual download as pre-recorded screencasts/videos and the PDFs of the presentations. More details can be found here: https://www.ifac2020.org/program.html

Below are the topics and goals of our invited session:

Technological progresses over the last 20 years, in particular in material sciences, have led to an increased use of large, light and then compliant structures in engineering applications. This is, in particular, the case in power generation using wind blades, soft robotics, modern aircraft or satellite design, etc. Such systems are governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) and are controlled through actuators located within or at the boundary of the spacial domain, leading to the class of Boundary Control Systems. Among these systems, most of them are subject to disturbances and/or interactions with fluids (e.g. air, water). These control systems give rise to challenging theoretical research questions such as modelling of interactions, numerical simulation issues, analysis, stabilization and control as well as technological issues: available sensors, processors, and actuators. These problems are at the core of the H2020 ITN project CONFLEX – Control of flexible structures and fluid-structure interactions, https://www.conflex.org/. This project gathers applied mathematicians and engineers working on the modeling and control of distributed parameter systems driven by PDEs. More specifically, it aims at fostering efforts in the study of distributed parameter systems subject to perturbations or/and in interaction with fluids. This session gathers preliminary results established within this project. It is composed of the following contributions:

• S. Fatemeh Shari and H. Zwart. PDE approach toward the calculation of the compliance function of flexible motion systems.

• S. Singh, G. Weiss and M. Tucsnak. A class of scattering-passive systems with bounded non-linear damping.

• G. Vergara-Hermosilla, D. Matignon, M. Tucsnak and F. Sueur. Input to state stability for a system modelling rigid structures floating in a viscous fluid.

• M. Artola, A. Wynn and R. Palacios. Modal-based model predictive control of multi-body very flexible structures.

• A. Mattioni, J. Toledo and Y. Le Gorrec. Observer based nonlinear control of a rotating flexible beam.

• J. Zhang and X. Zhao. Data-driven structural control of monopile wind turbine towers based on machine learning.
